Overview of Permit

A street occupancy permit is required anytime to install a utility within a linear excavation in the public right-of-way. This permit is for gas, fiber, or electrical installation projects. The standard fee for the permit is $75, and the fee for inspection required under this permit is $75 per inspection. Additional fees may be required based on the scope of work.

Apply for a Permit

You can apply online using this self-service portal (search for “Street Occupancy – Linear Excavation for Utilities” in the apply permit screen). You can upload any needed documents and process payments online. 

Permit submittal requirements for a utility permit:

Please submit a plan showing the location of the work with your application. 

The plan should include the following information (at a minimum):

• Location of the proposed utility work
• Length of linear excavation trench
• Location of any additional proposed structures. For example, the location of a proposed pull box.

Length of Time for Permit

The permit is valid for 60 days after the start date.

Cost

The standard fee for this Permit is $75, and the fee for inspection required under this permit is $75 per inspection. Additional fees may be required based on the scope of work.

You will receive permit application fee, inspection, and street deposit invoices through the self-service portal. You can pay by credit card through the self-service portal, or drop off payment in person through mail, or by using the secure payment depository at City Hall. Please include “Attention: Engineering Services” on envelopes which are submitted via mail or to the Secure Payment Depository drop-off box. Make checks payable to “City of Wauwatosa” and clearly identify the purpose for the payment on the check (e.g., “Street Occupancy Permit Application”).
