Wauwatosa Area Child Care Services

Car Seat Installation Assistance

The Wauwatosa Health Department offers free car seat checks by appointment Monday - Thursday 9:00AM - 3:00PM.

Why have a car seat safety check?

With the many different kinds of car seats, it can be confusing how to properly install them.

While most parents and caregivers are confident that they have correctly installed their child’s car seat, almost half (46%), have been installed incorrectly.

The Wauwatosa Health Department offers free car seat checks by appointment Monday-Thursday 9:00AM-3:00PM. We have a certified child passenger safety technician who can provide instruction on installing a car seat or conduct a car seat inspection by appointment. To submit a car seat check request, please fill out the service request form. To receive information on this service or to make an appointment with the Health Department, please call 414-479-8939.

Quick Reminders:

  • Booster seats go in the back seat. Wisconsin law says that children must ride in a booster seat until they are 8 years old OR weigh 80 lbs OR are 4'9" (Children should also ride in the back seat until age 13).
  • No bulky jackets. Bulky clothes (winter coats and snowsuits) can compress in a crash and leave the straps too loose to restrain your child, which may lead to increased risk of injury.
  • No slack in harness straps. Loose or twisted straps allow for too much movement in the seat, making the child less secure.
  • Secure the chest clip at the armpit level. If the clip is too low, the harness straps may not be positioned correctly on your child's shoulders, especially if the straps are also too loose.
  • No "sleeping bag style" car seat covers. These may push the harness out of position, add slack into the harness system, and cause the child to be too warm in the car with the heater in use.
