What are Community Development Block Grant Funds?

How federal funds are helping local non-profits, small businesses, and our community
Post Date:04/08/2021 3:25 PM

life navigatorsAs an entitlement community, the City of Wauwatosa receives annual Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds and determines its own programs and priorities. We give maximum priority to activities which benefit low and moderate-income persons. The City may also carry out activities that aid in the prevention or elimination of slums, blight, or may fund activities having a particular urgency because existing conditions pose a serious and immediate threat to the health/welfare of the community when other financial resources are not available. CDBG funds may not be used for activities that do not meet these national objectives. Funds must be expended in a manner that will produce the greatest measurable impact in the community.

These funds touch nearly every community effort in Wauwatosa, from supporting the Walnut Glen affordable housing development, creating forgivable loans for small businesses, helping the Senior Center programs, and supporting renovations to organizations that have activities which benefit low and moderate-income persons. Read about how Life Navigators, a nonprofit which assists individuals with developmental disabilities, renovated their space to serve their clients.

CDBG is a versatile funding source that helps us revitalize our neighborhoods and improve our citizens’ lives.
