Wauwatosa Delays Special Assessment Bills

Homeowners will receive bills in mid-June and could request interest-free payments through November
Post Date:03/30/2020 10:17 AM

Certain work, such as the cost of a street, alley, drive approach, and sidewalk improvement, in Wauwatosa is billed through special assessments.

Generally speaking, special assessment has a two year timeline. In year one, property owners are notified of the project and the project is then completed. In year two, the bills are sent to property owners who can choose a payment option.

We recognize the effects that the COVID-19 health crisis might have on Wauwatosa families. The Finance Department has made the decision to delay special assessment bills until mid-June 2020. (Normally these are billed in early spring.) Once homeowners receive a special assessment, they would have 30 days to pay the special assessment. Or, a homeowner could submit a written request to the Treasurer’s Office prior to the due date and extend the deadline to November 1, 2020. This would be interest-free.

Assessments under $200 are due on or before November 1, 2020, while assessments over $5,000 are eligible for a 10-year installment plan. After November 1, 2020, the remaining balance would roll onto your property tax bill. A homeowner could make a payments on the principal balance plus interest added to the property tax bill.

Property Tax Payment Installation Due Dates

On a related note, as of this time the State of Wisconsin has not changed the due dates for property tax payments. The final property tax installment payment is due May 31, 2020 to the City of Wauwatosa.
