Plastic Bag Collection Paused during COVID-19

We are pausing this plastic bag challenge at this time. Please check back for updates.

As you might know, we can't recycle plastic bags (and other soft plastic) in our curbside recycling program. Plastic bags get caught in our recycling sorter, and they might also become too contaminated to get value in recycling them. These types of plastics have to be recycled differently.

We're participating in the Trex Company's recycling challenge with the goal to recycle at least 500 pounds of plastic between now and August 2020. That's equivalent to about 40,500 plastic film and bags. If we meet this goal, we'll be awarded a bench made from recycled plastic.

If I can't recycling these in the curbside program, where do I bring my plastic goods?

You can bring a variety of plastic items (see below for a full list) to City Hall's first floor hallway, Drop Off Center, or the Public Works office.

What can be recycled during this challenge?

All plastic must be clean, dry, and free of food residue.

  • grocery bags
  • bread bags
  • bubble wrap
  • dry cleaning bags
  • newspaper sleeves
  • ice bags
  • plastic shipping envelopes
  • Ziploc and other food storage bags (must be dry and clean)
  • cereal bags
  • case overwrap (such as the plastic over a case of water)
  • salt bags
  • pallet wrap and stretch film
  • wood pellet bags
  • produce bags
