The Wauwatosa Water Utility's goal is to provide our customers with an ample supply of high quality water at a fair and reasonable rate for public health and sanitation in addition to fire protection demands through continual evaluations of utility assets, effective preventative maintenance programs, and efficient daily operations.

Originally established in 1897, the Wauwatosa Water Utility used groundwater as the source of water supply.  In 1963, through a purchase agreement with the Milwaukee Water Works, the Water Utility started to deliver treated Lake Michigan water to our customers.  In 2016, the Water Utility supplied 15,507 customers with 1,372,494,000 gallons of clean fresh water.

Source of Water
Lake Michigan, one of the largest bodies of fresh water in the world, is the source of Wauwatosa's water. The water distributed by the Water Utility is purchased from the Milwaukee Water Works, who performs all the necessary water filtration, treatment, and pumping to our city limits.

Regulations & Uses
Water distributed by the Water Utility complies with all federal and state drinking water quality regulations.  The Water Utility is regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Our water rate structure is established under the guidance of the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin

In addition to providing water for continuous daily demand by our residential, commercial, and industrial customers, the Water Utility also provides fire protection for the community by maintaining 2,197 public fire hydrants throughout the water distribution system.

Funding & Operation

The Wauwatosa Water Utility is an enterprise fund of the City and is self-supporting through the sale of water and related services to our customers.  The Water Utility staff operates and maintains four pumping stations, seven water storage reservoirs, and 203 miles of water main.  During 2016, the average demand of our customers resulted in pumping 4.43 million gallons of water per day.
