Historic Preservation
In 1995, the City of Wauwatosa created a Historic Preservation Commission to promote preservation of the many historic places in Wauwatosa. The Commission's responsibilities include:
  • designating historic properties, sites, and districts
  • serving as a design review board for locally designated historic properties
  • providing historic preservation education
For more information about the Commission's powers and duties, please refer to Title 24 of the Municipal Code.

Preservation of Properties (PoP) Awards

the 2017 Historic Preservation Commission POP awards will be announced at the May 2, 2017 Common Council meeting.  Stay tuned.

POP Awards honor exterior improvements to residential, commercial, and public property in the City of Wauwatosa. The nominated property must be at least 50 years old and the improvements must have been completed with five years prior to the date of nomination.  This is your chance to recognize and express appreciation to people who take care of their property and who make your neighborhood a good place to live.

CLG Subgrant
The City of Wauwatosa Historic Preservation Commission conducted a phase one of city-wide intensive survey to identify non-residential properties of architectural and historical significance that are potentially eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

The study can be found here.

The Commission recently was awarded another subgrant to inventory and identify residential properties within the City.  Survey results will be available in early 2018.

Funding for this project was provided entirely by a Certified Local Government Subgrant from the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior and administered by the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Locally Designated Historic Properties or Districts
One of the responsibilities of the Historic Preservation Commission is to designate properties, sites and districts within the City of Wauwatosa that are historically significant.

The Historic Preservation Commission published several documents, including design guidelines, historic surveys and walking tour booklets and brochures.
